Dave
McFarlane is a respected guitarist, singer and songwriter living in the
Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne, with five independent CD
releases.
Dave performs at major festivals, clubs and venues
across Australia, his songs receive regular ABC and community radio
airplay and he has officiated at many song-writing and performance
competitions including Port Fairy & Maldon Folk Festivals with 6
consecutive years as judge of the Australian Busking Championships.
Starting to play during the 70’s complete with long hair and patched
jeans Dave found himself irresistibly attracted to the
singer/songwriters riding a wave of changing genres from blues to folk
pop… Genres that are now turning full circle with the resurgence of
singer/songwriters such as Missy Higgins, Pete Murray & John Butler.
Dave released his first solo acoustic album 'Strange Kind of Dream' in
1997 showcasing a fast-growing body of work with an honest, no-frills
feel reminiscent of early blues albums. It also featured Travelling
Man, recipient of the 1997 Lawson Patterson Songwriting Award at Port
Fairy Folk Festival.
The 1999 'Great Southern Blues' featured original slide pieces
including ‘Make it Home To You’ plus retro-arranged rock classics
such as Jumping Jack Flash (Rolling Stones), and Black Dog (Led
Zeppelin) played in roots and blues styles to great effect.
Starting to attract radio airplay and a growing reputation as a blues
& slide guitarist, Dave recorded 'Unknown Incident' in 2000 with
duo Planigale, going on to spend the next years writing a unique
collection of songs about issues and perspectives that make up our
lives.
The 2004 release ‘Sometimes The Best Laid Plans’ distilled three
decades of material into a vibrant and energetic storyboard of sound,
featuring a strong rhythm section and trademark roots instruments
skilfully provided by band ONE DAY swinging from moody acoustic to
compelling electric.
Now comfortably ‘sidetracked’ back into a blues & roots groove, the
2006 release Tin Suitcase Blues is an acoustic blues & roots effort
comprised of 10 guitar-based tracks including the stand out slide
guitar original Money Break My Heart plus great arrangements of
classics such as Someday After A While and It Hurts Me Too.
For many, the real hook will be retro-arrangements of hit rock songs
such as Deep Purple’s Lazy, Rolling Stones Jumping Jack Flash and
several Led Zeppelin songs including Black Dog and When The Levee
Breaks… if you thought they could never be done without a Marshall
stack turned up to 11 you’ll get a pleasant surprise as Dave’s
trademark guitar licks, blues harp and flat foot-stomping rhythm take
these well known songs to an entirely different level.
In 2007, a long-time respect for Eric Clapton's music resulted in Dave forming Claptonesque... a dedicated night of Clapton Classics faithfully performed in a fantastic concert atmosphere... read more
